Miisa Nampajärvi is a Senior Consultant, whose specialty is SAP backend development, more familiarly known as ABAPper. She has been working with us since February 2022.
Miisa is living in Porvoo with her partner and 5-year-old daughter, where they enjoy the cozy feeling of the old town of Porvoo and nice atmosphere by the river. In addition to being a tourist in her own city, Miisa enjoys doing yoga and meditation as a counterbalance to the busier times in life. The jazz clubs and music scene in general in Porvoo is also something of an interest to Miisa.
Journey from clarinets to SAP
Miisa did already have some clue of coding before making a career out of it, but the start was not enticing enough: ”My first encounters with coding were in secondary school and I thought it was the most boring thing I’ve ever done. Bunch of scribbling and printing and dots missing which led to non-functioning code”.
The very first encounters didn’t yet lead to a career in software development, but Miisa followed her passion and musical talents to studying clarinet playing and teaching. She graduated from Lahti University of Applied Sciences with an exchange period in The Royal Academy of Music Aarhus in Denmark. A career in IT started to interest Miisa when she got into a conversation with one of her friends about the topic and gained some insights of the industry and the needed skills. Miisa recognized that her logical way of thinking and problem solving could be a great asset in the IT world and she took her shot in applying for university degree in computer science.Miisa got her Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from University of Helsinki and after graduation, was accepted to an SAP trainee program. Through the program, she was employed to her first SAP related job where she spent almost ten years before starting with us at Neomore in February 2022.
Working as a technical wizard in a skilled team
In our UX & Application Innovation team, Miisa spends her days with SAP development, mostly from the backend side, working with our customers’ change requests or incidents. Some of her work is fairly independent, but she also gets to work with our UI developers, application consultants and of course customers, depending on the projects and roles. Our application consultants are experts with our customers’ business processes and our developers are the technical wizards evaluating from technical perspective how the issue is solved. Variability is what keeps things interesting; some functionalities take weeks to create and some bug fixes a shorter time to solve. Our team is very technically competent, and we have a wide variety of skillsets. This of course enhances everyone’s individual development opportunities and motivation to learn, when you are surrounded by a skilled team. You are able to learn new in your own tasks, but also from the people around you.
New things for Miisa at Neomore have been the OData services and backend development of SAP Fiori. Our Fiori competence and development is something we are the best known for, so Neomore is THE place to get the most of it!Laid-back environment and flat organization make it easy for things to move forward and your own job a lot more straight-forward. Miisa appreciates the possibility to organize your own work in a way that works best for you in maintaining work-life balance and not pushing everyone to the same routines. We have people in very different stages of life and careers; fresh graduates and experts with over 20-year careers behind them. Our team brings a lot of different perspectives and mindsets to what we do and the way we do things. Different backgrounds also have an affect on the kind of applications we create and the new things we innovate!
’’You don’t have to be a super nerd to be a developer’’
Miisa thinks that the most important qualities for a developer are an innovative mindset for problem solving and perseverance (more familiar in Finnish = sisu). As we already know, Miisa hadn’t been coding as a hobby before starting her career in IT and she thinks that ‘’you don’t have to be a super nerd to be a developer’’. This is often the image people have of developers and indeed many might have been familiar with code from a very young age. Miisa’s background in music has brought an interesting twist to code and developing as well; with playing music and coding, the feedback is similar – immediate! Whether there is a small (or a bigger) error somewhere, you will immediately notice it. F
or Miisa, the most interesting aspect is to get to dig deep into the code and start to concretely research what went wrong. These qualities are strongly linked to the ability and willingness to learn new things and absorb new information. The IT industry is developing and changing so quickly that even if you would’ve been in the industry for a longer time, you regularly get to update your skills or learn something completely new. Because of the extent of it, even just with SAP there is always something new and interesting to learn. One of the best things about the industry is that there is always a possibility to develop your skills and learn new technologies or programming languages. So in brief, if you like learning new, you won’t get bored!
