Success Story: Neomore’s Collaboration with Meyer Turku

Meyer Turku stands as a beacon in the shipbuilding industry, boasting a rich history dating back to 1737. Renowned for its high-quality vessels, Meyer Turku is among the largest and most modern shipbuilding companies globally.

Unique industry and complexity of operations

Navigating the intricate landscape of shipbuilding processes presents significant requirements for the service providers of Meyer Turku. Their unique industry demands solutions tailored to their specific needs. Traditional SAP processes often fall short in addressing the complexities of their operations, necessitating a more flexible approach to development and project management.

Jyri, a Senior Consultant from UX & Application Innovation Team: “We’ve been tweaking the project for a couple of years now. With multiple parts and phases, the project started with the production planning process, and now we’ve made various applications related to different processes. There are always new developments, both enhancing existing ones and creating new ones.”

He continues: “Fiori projects involve traditional ABAP code and SAPUI5 applications, and in scheduling tasks, we’ve used third party libraries to achieve better looking charts. When coding SAP, there are always challenges, though. Some limitations and restrictions might arise due to SAP’s interfaces and functions, so we have to find workarounds.”

Recognizing the need for customized solutions, Neomore embarked on a journey of collaborative innovation with Meyer Turku. The focus of Neomore’s collaboration with Meyer Turku revolved around enhancing production planning, project management and scheduling processes. Leveraging their expertise, Neomore addressed the client’s need for specialized Fiori applications, bridging the gap between traditional SAP functionalities and Meyer Turku’s requirements.

Mikko, also a Senior Consultant from UX & Application Innovation Team: “One cannot succeed in projects like this without substantial experience. The challenges always arise from the nature of SAP being a highly special ERP system with it’s own tools, solutions, best practices and ways of working. Changes under the bonnet are made to fulfill the needs of the client, and my work is to adapt SAP to those customer specific processes required at the time.”

Clarity, efficiency and agile development

Neomore’s solutions brought clarity and efficiency to Meyer Turku’s planning processes. By integrating custom Fiori applications with SAP systems, Neomore streamlined operations, enabling seamless navigation through complex tasks such as order scheduling.

Neomore adopted an agile development approach, ensuring rapid responses to evolving client needs. The small, dedicated project team worked closely with Meyer Turku, fostering open communication and facilitating continuous collaboration. This agile methodology empowered the team to adapt quickly to changing requirements and deliver optimized solutions efficiently.

Mikko: “Shipbuilding creates its own patterns in the process. Material and component handling is a complex whole – as one can imagine when the task is to build a small city on top of water. As a developer, we have no big, predefined specification that is followed meticulously; the overall framework is of course set but smaller details are solved through agile development.”

Jyri: “We have been thanked for the expertise and responsiveness when delivering changes and reacting to problems. As an example – in construction projects where there’s a large amount of data, we have been able to optimize the performance.”

Jyri continues: “The project team working on a single application is small, 2-3 people, and the development approach is agile; we are in constant contact with each other, whether positioned physically in the same room or online, working together and resolving issues in real-time. Therefore, the client has effectively received results and fixes.”

Mikko adds: “Agile development is a good way to create systems and solutions that work well. In large consulting companies, bureaucracy can remove agility. Neomore isn’t small, but we have retained our flexibility and there isn’t really any overhead coming from the organization itself enabling us to focus purely on the work at hand. Customer presents us with a problem and we come up with a sensible way to solve it for them.”

Results and client satisfaction

Through Neomore’s collaboration with Meyer Turku, the shipbuilding giant was able to overcome formidable obstacles and optimize its operations for greater efficiency and effectiveness.
